Garage golf simulators
A garage is often the best space for a home simulator: a level floor, few windows and no bedrooms next door. The usual problem is height, since many garages have a low ceiling or an up-and-over door that swings into the space. A light fit-out with kit can cost a few thousand pounds; a full single garage conversion is typically £10,000 to £20,000 before the simulator.

Check your garage for these
- Ceiling or roof timbers at least about 2.7 metres high where you swing.
- An up-and-over door, its runners or a door motor in the swing path.
- At least 3 metres of clear width once shelves and storage are moved.
- Damp or condensation that could harm the projector and electronics.
- Enough sockets, or a spare way on the consumer unit for a new circuit.
- Whether the car still needs to fit, which affects whether you convert or keep it flexible.

Conversion figures from Checkatrade (May 2026, excluding VAT); kit tiers from the GolfBays 2026 price guide; panel dens from Tekden. GolfBays' own worked garage example came to about £3,500 for kit and £960 for finishes. Read 26 October 2026. What a good quote includes
Ask for these six points in writing. Two quotes that cover them can be compared line by line.
Height and door
Measured height at the swing position and how the door opens, with a fix if it intrudes, such as a roller or side-hinged door.
Floor
The slab checked for level, and a mat and turf or flooring that suits concrete.
Damp and temperature
Insulation, a dehumidifier or heating, so the kit lasts and the room is usable in winter.
Electrics
Sockets near the projector and PC, and any new circuit certified.
Car and storage
Whether the enclosure is fixed or can fold away so the garage can still be used.
Planning and regs
Internal work rarely needs planning; a conversion to a habitable room normally needs building regulations approval.

Measure and clear
Measure height, width and depth, and clear the hitting zone of storage.
Deal with the door
Check the door in its open position; some owners change to a roller or side-hinged door.
Prepare
Add sockets, lighting and insulation, and treat any damp.
Install
Fit the enclosure, mat, monitor and projector, then calibrate.
Questions people ask
Is my garage tall enough for a golf simulator?
Measure from floor to the lowest point above where you swing, including roof timbers and the open garage door. GolfBays gives 2.8 m as a minimum (ideally 3 m); Trackman's garage guide says 9 to 10 ft, about 2.7 to 3 m. Many golfers can swing an iron lower than a driver.
Do I need planning permission to put a simulator in my garage?
Not usually. The Planning Portal says planning permission is not usually required for internal work that does not enlarge the building, though some new estates and conservation areas have had permitted development rights removed. Converting an attached or integral garage into a habitable room normally needs building regulations approval.
What about the up-and-over garage door?
When open, an up-and-over door and its runners sit under the ceiling and can take away the height you need. Many people swap to a roller door or side-hinged doors, or position the enclosure where the door does not reach.
Will a cold, damp garage damage the kit?
It can. Trackman suggests a dehumidifier if the garage gets damp. Insulation and a heater make it usable in winter and protect the projector and PC.
Can I still park the car in the garage?
Sometimes. Some enclosures and screens can be retracted, but projectors and ceiling-mounted monitors stay in place. A permanent bay is simpler if you can spare the space.
