Golf simulator sheds in the UK

A shed is the first idea for many golfers, but most standard sheds are far too low: ceilings of about 2.1 to 2.4 metres, against the 2.7 to 3 metres a full driver swing usually needs. What works is a tall, insulated "golf shed" or cabin built for the job, typically £9,800 to £15,000 for the building before base and power, according to published prices.

What a shed needs before it can take a simulator

  • An internal height of about 2.7 to 3 metres where you swing, after the floor is in.
  • At least 3 metres of width, more if left and right-handed players will share it.
  • Depth for the ball to sit about 3 metres or more from the screen, plus your swing behind it.
  • A solid, level floor that takes a hitting mat without flexing.
  • Insulation and a dry interior, so the projector, PC and monitor are not damaged by damp.
  • A proper power supply from the house on its own circuit.

What a good quote includes

Ask for these six points in writing. Two quotes that cover them can be compared line by line.

  1. Height checked first

The finished internal height measured at the swing position. If it is under about 2.7 m, the quote should say so.

  2. Floor

Joists and boards strong enough for the mat and repeated hitting, or a concrete base.

  3. Insulation and damp

Walls, roof and floor insulated, and ventilation or a dehumidifier to keep electronics dry.

  4. Power

An armoured cable and new circuit from the house, certified by a registered electrician.

  5. Security

Locks and, ideally, no expensive kit visible through the windows.

  6. Planning position

Overall height and distance from boundaries, and whether permitted development covers it.

From shed idea to golf shed

  1. Measure what you have

Internal height, width and depth. Most existing sheds fail on height, and that settles it.

  2. Choose a building

If the shed is too low, pick a tall golf shed or cabin sized for your swing.

  3. Base, power and insulation

Lay a level base, insulate, and have a new circuit run from the house.

  4. Fit the simulator

Enclosure or screen, mat, projector and monitor installed and calibrated.

Questions people ask

Can I put a golf simulator in a normal shed?

Rarely with a full swing. Summerhouse24 notes that standard sheds have ceilings around 2.1 to 2.4 m, too low for a driver. A short-game or putting setup may fit, but most golfers need a taller building.

What size shed do I need for a golf simulator?

Roughly 3 m wide, 4 to 5 m deep and 2.7 to 3 m high inside as a minimum, based on GolfBays, Tekden and Summerhouse24 guidance. Golf sheds and cabins of about 6 by 4 m outside are common. See our size guide.

Do I need planning permission for a golf simulator shed?

In England, permitted development allows outbuildings up to 2.5 m high within 2 m of a boundary, and up to 4 m (dual-pitched roof) or 3 m (other roofs) further away, with eaves no higher than 2.5 m. A shed tall enough for golf usually has to sit more than 2 m from the boundary to avoid an application. See the Planning Portal.

Does a golf shed need building regulations?

Not normally if it is under 15 m² with no sleeping accommodation, or 15 to 30 m² and at least 1 m from every boundary or mostly non-combustible. The electrics are separate: a new circuit to an outbuilding is notifiable.

Will damp damage the simulator?

It can. Projectors, PCs and launch monitors do not like damp or condensation. Insulate the building, keep it ventilated, and consider a dehumidifier, as Trackman suggests for damp garages.
