Golf simulator installation

A professional golf simulator installation turns a box of kit into a bay you can swing a driver in safely: the enclosure is built square and tight, the screen tensioned, the projector aligned with no shadow, the launch monitor set at the right distance, and new circuits installed by a registered electrician. Kit runs from about £1,500 to £3,000 for an entry setup to £10,000 and up for a premium one, before fitting.

When a professional fit is worth it

  • The projector or launch monitor goes on the ceiling and needs a secure fixing and hidden cables.
  • You need new sockets or a new circuit, which in England must be certified by a registered electrician or signed off.
  • Your ceiling is close to the minimum and the layout has to be worked out to the centimetre.
  • You are buying a premium enclosure or tour-level monitor and want it calibrated properly.
  • The room is shared, has windows or doors in the hitting zone, or needs sound reduction.
  • You want one firm to design, supply and fit everything, with one point of contact afterwards.

What a good quote includes

Ask for these six points in writing. Two quotes that cover them can be compared line by line.

  1. A site survey

Measured width, depth and ceiling height, where the ball will sit, and anything in the way: lights, beams, windows, radiators and doors.

  2. A layout drawing

Where the enclosure, mat, launch monitor and projector go, with the distances between them and room for left and right-handed players if needed.

  3. The kit, itemised

Each component named with its price, so you can compare like with like between quotes.

  4. Electrics

New sockets or circuits, who does them, and the certificate you will receive.

  5. Calibration and handover

Projector alignment, screen tension, monitor set-up and software installed, with a walkthrough.

  6. Aftercare

Who to call if something stops working, what the warranties cover and how long they last.

How a golf simulator installation usually goes

  1. Survey and design

The installer measures the space, checks the ceiling height and swing path, and proposes a layout and kit list.

  2. Quote and order

You agree a written quote with each item listed. Kit is ordered and a fitting date set.

  3. Preparation

An electrician adds sockets or circuits, and any lighting, flooring or wall work is done first.

  4. Fitting

The enclosure is built, the screen hung and tensioned, the mat laid, and the projector and monitor mounted.

  5. Calibration and handover

The image is aligned, the monitor calibrated, software set up, and you are shown how it all works.

Questions people ask

How long does a golf simulator installation take?

It depends on the job. GolfBays says its SimBox enclosure frame clicks together without tools in under an hour, and describes one full home install as taking about three days. A garden room adds the build: Green Retreats quotes 2 to 5 days for its rooms, and Golf Sim Rooms puts a whole garden project at 4 to 8 weeks.

Can I install a golf simulator myself?

Many people fit an entry or mid-range kit themselves, since ready-made enclosures are designed for it. Get help for ceiling fixings, cable runs and anything electrical: in England a new circuit is notifiable and must be done by a registered electrician or signed off by a registered third party.

Do I need an electrician?

If you need a new circuit, yes. The IET's Part P guidance lists a new circuit, a consumer unit replacement and work in bathrooms as notifiable in England. Plugging the kit into existing sockets is not.

What should an installer check before quoting?

The ceiling height where you swing, the room width for your stance, the depth from ball to screen, where the projector can sit, and the power available. Our size guide lists the measurements to take.

Does installation include the software?

Usually the installer sets up the software you have chosen. Some software is a yearly subscription: Tekden lists typical costs of about £150 to £300 a year for common packages, so ask what is included and for how long.
