Golf simulator cabins

A log cabin built for golf is usually the lowest-cost way to get a full-swing simulator in the garden. Golf cabins are taller than ordinary summerhouses and typically about 4 by 3 metres up to 6.6 by 4.5 metres. Published prices run from about £9,830 to £15,011 for the cabin, and about £14,000 to £30,000 for a finished project with the simulator.

When a log cabin makes sense

  • You want a garden simulator for less than a bespoke garden room.
  • The garden has room for a building of about 4 by 3 metres or larger, set back from the boundaries.
  • You like the look of timber, or want a cabin that matches other garden buildings.
  • You are happy with a few days of assembly and a simpler specification.
  • You want room for a sofa or a gym corner behind the hitting area.

What a good quote includes

Ask for these six points in writing. Two quotes that cover them can be compared line by line.

  1. Internal height

The finished height inside where you swing, ideally about 2.8 m or more after the floor goes in.

  2. Log thickness and insulation

Wall thickness, floor and roof insulation, and whether it will stay usable in winter.

  3. Base

Concrete slab, ground screws or a timber base, its size, and who lays it.

  4. Assembly

Whether the supplier builds it, how long it takes, and who treats the timber.

  5. Power and lighting

The armoured cable from the house, the new circuit and certificate, and lighting over the hitting area.

  6. Simulator fit-out

Enclosure, screen, mat, projector and monitor, and who installs them.

How a golf cabin goes in

  1. Choose the size

Pick a cabin with enough internal height, width and depth for your swing and monitor.

  2. Check planning

Confirm height and distance from the boundaries against permitted development, or apply.

  3. Base and assembly

The base is laid, then the cabin is built, treated and insulated.

  4. Power and fit-out

An electrician runs a new circuit, then the simulator is installed and calibrated.

Questions people ask

Is a log cabin tall enough for a golf simulator?

A cabin designed for golf usually is. Standard sheds and many summerhouses have ceilings around 2.1 to 2.4 m, which Summerhouse24 says is too low for a driver. Look for about 2.7 to 3 m inside.

Do I need planning permission for a golf cabin?

Not if it stays within permitted development in England: behind the front of the house, single storey, eaves up to 2.5 m, overall height up to 4 m with a dual-pitched roof, and no more than 2.5 m high within 2 m of a boundary. Tekden notes that golf cabins are often taller than 2.5 m, so position matters.

How long does a golf cabin take to build?

Summerhouse24 says cabin assembly takes a few days to a week, with the simulator fit-out adding a day or two. The base and electrics need to be ready first.

What base does a log cabin need?

A flat, level base: usually concrete, ground screws or a timber frame. The supplier will specify it. Ask whether the base is included in the price, since most published cabin prices do not say.

Can a log cabin be used in winter?

If it is insulated and heated. Check the wall thickness, floor and roof insulation, and plan for a heater or air conditioning. A cold room also makes the ball fly shorter.
