Golf simulator size: the room dimensions you need

For a full swing with a driver, most guidance puts the minimum room at about 3 metres wide, 4.5 to 5 metres deep and 2.7 to 2.8 metres high, with 4 to 4.6 metres wide, 5 to 5.5 metres deep and 3 metres high as comfortable. Ceiling height usually decides it. Radar launch monitors that sit behind the golfer need the most depth.

The measurements that matter

  • Ceiling height: at least about 2.7 to 2.8 metres where you swing; 3 metres is comfortable.
  • Width: 3 metres minimum, about 4 metres if left and right-handed players share the bay.
  • Depth: about 4.5 metres for a camera monitor beside the ball, 5 to 5.5 metres for radar behind you.
  • Ball to screen: about 3 metres, so mishits slow down before the screen.
  • Screen to wall: 30 cm behind a fully framed screen, 50 cm behind one that hangs loose.
  • Projector: on the target line, roughly 2.1 to 2.4 metres from the screen and close above or behind the golfer.

What a good quote includes

Ask for these six points in writing. Two quotes that cover them can be compared line by line.

  1. Measure the ceiling where you swing

Measure from the floor to the lowest point above the hitting area, including lights, beams and an open garage door.

  2. Test your swing

Swing your driver slowly in the space, or ask an installer to check your swing plane against the ceiling.

  3. Know your monitor type

Camera units beside the ball or on the ceiling need less depth than radar units behind the golfer.

  4. Allow for the mat

A raised hitting mat or platform takes a few centimetres off the ceiling height.

  5. Think about sharing

Left and right-handed players need the ball centred, so allow about 4 metres of width.

  6. Leave space to watch

Seating behind the hitter, well outside the swing path, adds a metre or more of depth.

How to measure your space

  1. Ceiling height

Floor to the lowest point above where you will stand, in metres.

  2. Width

Wall to wall across the hitting area, minus anything that sticks out.

  3. Depth

From the wall where the screen will go to the back wall, minus doors and furniture.

  4. Obstacles

Note lights, beams, windows, radiators, doors and sockets, with their positions.

Questions people ask

What ceiling height do I need for a golf simulator?

About 2.7 to 2.8 m as a minimum for most golfers swinging a driver, and 3 m to be comfortable. GolfBays gives 2.8 m (ideally 3 m), Summerhouse24 2.7 m, and Trackman 3.0 m. Tall golfers may need more.

Can I have a golf simulator with a 2.4 m ceiling?

Probably not for a full driver swing. Standard rooms and sheds of 2.1 to 2.4 m are too low for most golfers. You may be able to hit shorter clubs, chip or putt. Test your swing slowly first.

How far should the ball be from the screen?

About 3 m is common. Trackman gives 3.0 m or more from screen to ball for its ceiling-mounted unit. Radar units behind the golfer need about 5 to 5.5 m from the unit to the screen.

How wide does a golf simulator room need to be?

At least 3 m for one right or left-handed golfer, positioned off-centre. GolfBays suggests 4 m if left and right-handers share it; Trackman suggests 4.6 m for a comfortable room.

How far should the screen be from the wall?

SimSpace Golf advises at least 30 cm behind a screen fixed on all sides, and 50 cm behind one that hangs from the top, so the ball can slow down without bouncing back.

Where does the projector go?

BenQ recommends mounting it on the target line, about 7 to 8 ft (roughly 2.1 to 2.4 m) from the screen and no more than 3 to 4 ft behind the golfer, so the player does not cast a shadow.
